Job Description:

Within the Stead Family Department of Pediatrics, Division of Hematology/Oncology maintain, update, and ensure the quality of the Iowa Hemophilia & Thrombosis Center and the Iowa Comprehensive Sickle Cell Disease Program databases. Assist in coordination of the Annual Hemophilia Camp, Amish Outreach Clinic, and Sickle Cell Symposium. This is a specified term position.


Duties to include:

  • Reviews, analyzes, and extracts patient medical records information for data collection.
  • Maintains Hemophilia and Sickle Cell databases by entering and updating data and performing monthly audits to ensure quality data collection.
  • Designs queries and reports through electronic medical record and databases in support of research, patient care, and other projects.
  • Manages the coordination of ATHN research studies through email communication, IRB submissions and modifications, enrollment into studies, and collection and processing of data.
  • Creates and maintains spreadsheets as needed. Uses spreadsheets to assist in visualization, and analysis of research and quality improvement data. Writes simple VBA scripts to automate repetitive tasks.
  • Submits grant applications and performs data quality submissions to specified personnel.

About the Division of Hematology/Oncology:


The Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at University of Iowa Children's Hospital is a pioneer in the care and treatment of childhood cancers and blood disorders. It is part of the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, and a member of the Children's Oncology Group (COG), a national consortium of pediatric cancer centers. The COG is well known for its new and innovative ways of treating childhood cancer. The division has a long history of success in bringing hope to patients with programs such as our blood and bone marrow transplant, comprehensive sickle cell program, and comprehensive hemophilia center.

The mission of the division is to treat and cure children and adolescents with cancer and blood diseases who live in Iowa by delivering personalized multidisciplinary, state-of-the-art care, through participation both in nationally and locally designed protocols.



Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 6 months -1 year of data abstracting and analysis experience
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience and proficiency in Microsoft Office and databases.
  • Demonstrated ability to function independently, needing minimal guidance.



Highly Desired Qualifications

  • 1-3 years of data abstracting experience within healthcare research
  • Demonstrated high attention to detail.
  • Experience using EPIC.



Desired Qualifications

  • Knowledge of University policies, procedures, and regulations
  • Demonstrated experience working with pediatric patients and their families.
