Position Summary:



The Construction Materials Testing Laboratory Manager will manage all aspects of construction materials testing, data collection, analysis, and reporting. The Lab Manager individually performs some tests while assigning other work and procedures to the lab technicians. Work is performed with considerable independence, with review of laboratory activities by the quality assurance manager and director of technical services. The lab manager will also be responsible for maintaining and ensuring safe operation of the 16,000 sq. ft. laboratory. This position works closely with other operations services teams such as exploration, geology, quality control, and mine planning.



Responsibilities:



  • Champion the Martin Marietta safety culture; administer the lab team's safety program, ensure compliance with all MSHA, OHSA, and company safety standards and practices, insure proper operation, maintenance, and repair of department equipment and assets.

  • Test aggregate quality for use in concrete, asphalt, and other applications; test and analyze exploration samples for compliance with applicable specifications.

  • Responsible for overseeing the physical testing of construction materials and exploration rock, sand, and gravel across the Enterprise.

  • Manage lab staff; assign work and outline procedures to be used by laboratory technicians, performs related work as required.

  • Review all test data for accuracy, distribute reports, and make recommendations when applicable.

  • Must be capable of managing all aspects of an AASHTO R-18 accredited laboratory; responsible for identifying and recording nonconformance and has the authority to initiate corrective action when necessary.

  • Provide technical consultation and make recommendations to leaders through presentations and documentation of lab results in coordination with company geologists, mining engineers, and other technical groups.

  • Partner and be an advocate for professional organizations, such as NSSGA, AASHTO and ASTM.

  • Support in-house technical training activities.

  • Support yearly budgeting, planning, and forecasting for the laboratory.

  • Develop concrete and asphalt mix designs for customers, as requested, and trouble-shoot performance issues in the field.

  • Optimize efficiency by continuously evaluating workflows and processes.

  • Other duties as assigned by department leadership.


Qualifications and Skills:



  • Possess a strong personal commitment and leadership in safety.

  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills.

  • BS Degree in Civil Engineering, Geology, or related curriculum with a strong interest in construction materials testing and performance.

  • Professional Engineer or Professional Geologist is preferred, or capable of achieving PE/PG within 1-2 years.

  • 5+ years of experience in the aggregates industry, including aggregate testing, asphalt design/testing, concrete design/testing, and facility management, preferred.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and StonemontQC, capable of quickly learning the lab's MTS system.

  • Working knowledge and capability of managing an AASHTO R-18 accredited laboratory is a plus.

  • Excellent verbal, written, and communication skills to include public speaking; strong time management skills; ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks.

  • Overnight travel throughout the US required, some international travel.
