The Role



Moderna is seeking a Senior Director of Patient Advocacy and Rare Disease Engagement to work within the entire rare disease organization to develop strong working relationships with Patient Advocacy organizations, key KOLs, and professional societies across the rare disease portfolio and progress common objectives to ensure betterment of patient care. Based in Cambridge, MA, this role will be a champion of the patient voice, gather critical insights and will partner closely with R&D, Commercial, Government Affairs, Communications, and other functions to inform a comprehensive, enterprise-wide Global Rare Disease Patient Advocacy Strategy spanning integrated programs and business priorities, in addition to leading the execution of the strategy with global and local colleagues. In addition, this role will support policy shaping objectives and facilitate engagement of patient groups with regulatory authorities, government and health technology assessment groups to ensure that patient perspective is at the center of all decisions. Recognizing the connectivity of the healthcare ecosystem in rare disease, this role will also liaise with key professional societies and conduct scientific exchange with prioritized HCPs.



Here's What You'll Do



  • Build the Global Rare Disease Patient Advocacy strategy from clinical stage to market for Moderna and lead its successful execution. The role will have global responsibility to develop the patient advocacy strategy across key markets and lead execution of the strategy in collaboration with local teams by providing the expertise and leveraging local relationships. Select prioritized countries include the United States, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Germany, and the UK


  • Drive, build, and enhance strategic alliances with national and global Patient Advocacy Groups such as NORD and EURORDIS that have a strong interest in rare disease policy through touch bases and other authentic engagements. This includes mapping key patients and rare disease groups in key markets and building relationships that enables progressing critical business objectives and improve patient care. It is important that this role take a global view of patient advocacy and rapidly expand its impact outside the US.


  • Lead engagement with various Scientific societies, PAGs, Rare Disease Advisory Councils to help build consensus and treatment guidelines when they need to be fully developed or updated.


  • Represent Moderna at key Patient Advocacy Conferences and symposia, at national and international scientific congresses in order to progress partnerships that support better patient care.


  • Develop and execute Patient Advisory Boards, Patient Leadership Councils and other forums in support of critical objectives pertaining to better understanding the patient true unmet need, gathering insights, supporting the amplification of the patient voice and ultimately, enabling Moderna to become embedded in the rare disease communities and ecosystem to better support patients and external stakeholders.


  • Work closely with the government relations, regulatory and access teams to facilitate engagement of patients' groups with regulatory authorities, government and health technology assessment groups to ensure that patient perspective is at the center of all decisions.




  • Collaborate with government relations to develop policy strategies and position papers supporting better patients care, and lead such execution




  • Ensure that patient facing materials are meaningful and impactful based on patient advisory group feedback


  • Represent the voice of independent patient communities to internal stakeholders to ensure that patient perspectives are integrated into the rare disease pipeline decision-making processes.


  • Actively monitor new developments and thought leader insights in the field of patient advocacy and incorporate such developments, ideas, and strategies into the development and execution of programs


  • Partner with thought leaders to amplify impact and progress business objectives.


  • Manage the Patient Advocacy budget and supervise the management of any external partners or agency resources.


  • Establish strategic relationships with key professional societies around the world to advance the understanding of mRNA treatments, understand treatment guidelines, and work toward improved care of individuals living with Rare Diseases


  • Conduct scientific exchange with HCPs in the US to further support the education and insight gathering among rare disease KOLs


  • Collaborate with HR and communications in the development and execution of patient- centered materials and company-wide initiatives including disease awareness campaigns and events that connect employees to the patient journey.





Here's What You'll Need (Minimum Qualifications)



  • Advanced degree in relevant field (MD, PharmD, PhD)


  • 12+ years' experience of relevant patient advocacy or related experience in the biotech/pharma industry the pharmaceutical industry or non-profit advocacy organization


  • Experience in external engagement with HCPs


  • Experience in external engagements with professional societies


  • Demonstrated knowledge of the biotech/pharma industry, including deep understanding of the Legal, Regulatory, and Compliance environment, including a strong understanding of guidelines and best practices for patient advocacy engagement
