Staff Clinician, HEART



The University of Pittsburgh is seeking a qualified clinician to join the University Counseling Center as a Staff Clinician for the Higher Education Assessment and Response Team (HEART) program. The UCC is a department within the Division of Student Affairs and aligned under the Wellness Team consisting of Campus Recreation, Student Health Services, and Care and Resource Support departments. Accredited by the International Accreditation of Counseling Services (IACS) and American Psychological Association (APA), the UCC exists to ensure healthy and thriving lives for University of Pittsburgh’s
diverse student population by providing crisis intervention, outreach, workshops, group, individual, relationship/couples therapy, and specialized treatment teams to assist with disordered eating, gender affirmation, substance use, trauma, culturally responsive care, transition care, and dialectical behavior therapy. The Staff Clinician, HEART will provide direct and indirect services to students, through UCC’s HEART program. Staff Clinician, HEART will respond to students who are experiencing urgent or crisis concerns to provide support in collaboration with First Responders/Pitt Police, which may include transporting students for further assessment to local facilities. Staff Clinician, HEART, may provide individual counseling, relationship/couples counseling, group counseling, clinical consultation, outreach programming, and participate in supervision and training, if selected and assigned. The Staff Clinician, HEART will have the opportunity to serve on committees within and outside of the center.

Additional job functions:

  1. Co-responds to welfare checks and crisis calls with Pitt Police for students with emergent behavioral health concerns on and around Oakland campus; and provides mental health and risk assessments and safety planning.
  2. Facilitates both voluntary hospital presentations as well involuntary commitment petitions when clinically warranted, necessary, and other voluntary measures have been exhausted.
  3. Provides transportation to students to appropriate crisis facility as clinically indicated.
  4. Manages follow-up, care referrals, and assists with linkage to treatment for students who have engaged in HEART services.
  5. Active in post-discharge planning for students who have utilized hospital or crisis services.
  6. Consults and collaborates with hospital staff as needed to support students admitted for inpatient services.
  7. Contributes to outreach, education, and training activities for Pitt faculty, staff, and students to familiarize use and access of HEART services.
  8. Participates in relevant treatment teams, committees as needed.
  9. Provides community support for those impacted by critical incidents on and around campus.
  10. Support staff who are managing students in crisis.

Job Summary

Provides individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, and drug and alcohol assessments; creates assessments and therapeutic courses of action. Creates and facilitates student psycho-educational, prevention, and support groups as well as student success programming. Instructs undergraduate classes; administers campus-wide initiatives. Assists to train interns and staff.


Essential Functions

Provides crisis intervention; short-term individual, couples, and group counseling; and brief drug and alcohol assessments for students. Develops comprehensive client assessments and identifies best therapeutic courses of action.

Develops and leads psycho-educational, prevention, and/or support groups for students.

Plans and implements personal development, student success, and wellness programming that supports student academic success.

Consults with and provide support/outreach for students, faculty, and staff.

Instructs and/or co-facilitates undergraduate classes.

Conducts bystander, sexual assault, sexual harassment, substance abuse programming and training, and other campus-wide initiatives.

Completes and maintains confidential client-related paperwork, including federal and state mandated forms, client diagnostic records, and progress reports while adhering to all applicable guidelines and University policies.

Assists with training student interns and other staff.

Develops and maintains healthy and productive relationships with staff, faculty, and other agencies to provide care coordination and support through advocacy, referral, and follow up.


Physical Effort

This is a partly sedentary position which involves light physical activity and sitting at a desk in an office, and it also involves moving around campus to respond to crisis calls.
