FIRST YEAR EXPERIENCE PROGRAM (SB-FYSM-IUSBA)



Job Summary



Peer mentors in the First Year Seminar (FYS) Program support first-year student's academic and personal success as they transition from high school to college. This program creates opportunities for current Indiana University South Bend (IUSB) students to develop and apply their leadership skills in service to the university.


Department-Specific Responsibilities


  • Assists with training of peer mentor colleagues.

  • Models good student behavior.

  • Facilitates small group discussions.

  • Creates and gives presentations on topics related to college success.

  • Interacts on a regular basis with all students in course.

  • Chats with students before and after class (as your schedule permits).

  • Makes a plan to be in contact with all students at least once a month (via email, messaging or some other means).

  • Provides advice and referrals to students as needed.

  • Consults with faculty partner and/or FYS Director as needed.

  • Meets with all students 1 on 1 by the end of the fifth week of class.

  • Meets with students additional times as required by faculty partner.

  • Meets with students on an as-needed basis.

  • Meets with FYS Director 1 on 1 in middle of semester (around Week 8) and at end of semester.

  • Meets regularly with faculty partner.

  • Completes tasks as assigned by faculty partner.

  • Responds to emails from FYS Director, faculty partner and other peer mentors in a timely manner.

  • Consults with faculty partner (and FYS Director as needed) to address any problems in class.

  • Completes evaluation of faculty partner at end of semester.

  • Adheres to the Indiana University Code of Students Rights, Responsibilities, and Conduct.

  • Holds 1 office hour per week. In consultation with faculty partner and FYS Director, may decide to hold more than 1 hour per week if appropriate.




Qualifications



EDUCATION



Required



  • Currently enrolled as a undergraduate student at Indiana University South Bend, with 30 completed credits.

  • 3.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA).

SKILLS



Required



  • Ability to effectively communicate and exchange information.




Working Conditions / Demands



This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. This position involves sedentary work as well as moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.



Additional Information



The person in this role is required to participate in a summer professional development program for training as a peer mentor (August 12-13 and 15, 2024). This person must attend monthly training sessions during the semester (Fall 2024: dates to be determined in consultation with peer mentor team) and make up any missed training sessions in a timely fashion. This person must attend First Year Seminar class each day or participate in activities associated with an online First Year Seminar.
