Hansberger Chair of Business Ethics. The family of the late Idaho business icon Robert V. Hansberger honored him by creating the Robert V. Hansberger Endowed Chair within the Boise State University College of Business and Economics. The gift established a permanently endowed fund for a business ethics chair position within the college.
Role and Responsibilities
The gift agreement establishing this position states in part: The Robert V. Hansberger Chair of Business Ethics will take a leadership role in the academic and business world to encourage corporate social responsibility and serious consideration and application of ethical values in making business decisions. Emphasis on the importance of dialogue for developing mature, moral judgment, both personally and in group decision-making, will form a core of the methodology for programs sponsored by this endowed chair. The chair will encourage the development of sound policies and practices, with moral values in business decisions that will result in healthy business relationships and strong community partnerships.
This prestigious endowed chair position empowers the college to recognize and support an outstanding teacher, scholar, and leader who is dedicated to expanding, enhancing, and perpetuating the hallmark of ethical practices and corporate social responsibility in the business community. The chairholder will take a prominent role within the Boise State University College of Business and Economics in teaching business ethics and leading an academic dialogue regarding ethical professional and corporate decision-making. The chair's primary teaching role will be instructing classes primarily composed of business ethics. The chair will have an ongoing research agenda in the area of business ethics. Outside of the classroom, the holder of the chair will develop engaging ways for students to explore ethical issues in business, such as through case study competitions, simulations, guest panels of business leaders, and guest lecturer presentations.
Typically, experienced candidates are provided up to two years toward the probationary promotion and tenure timeline. However, the preferred candidate would ideally be eligible for consideration under the college's guidelines for granting tenure upon hire. The chair may be hired at the associate or professor level based on the individual's experience and credentials. By university policy, if hired at as a tenured associate faculty member, the chair holder will be required to spend a minimum of five years in rank at Boise State University to be considered for promotion to professor.
Award
In accordance with Boise State University's Policy 11030, the Robert V. Hansberger Endowed Chair is a renewable five-year award. The holder has the privilege and responsibility to use the title in their professional duties and publications. In addition to the chair holder's base salary the faculty member will receive an annual stipend of $25,000 in salary per year with accompanying benefits. This amount will be adjusted by the dean in alignment with the university change in compensation increases assuming resources are available from the Robert V. Hansberger Endowed Chair Fund for this purpose. The chairholder will receive one annual course release in order to conduct the responsibilities of this position beyond their typical teaching, research, and service capacity.
Budget and Use of Funds
The holder of the Hansberger Endowed Chair will have approximately $35,000 per year available from the earnings of the endowment to use in accomplishing their goals. The funds may be used for such purposes as graduate student support, and covering expenses related to research, travel and organizing events and competitions corresponding with this position. Payment will be made from these funds to employ an adjunct faculty member with substantial applied industry experience working with business ethical issues to fill in the released course of the endowed chair holder.
Reporting and Responsibility
The holder of the Hansberger Endowed Chair will annually provide their department chair, COBE Dean, and Provost a report of teaching, scholarly, and service accomplishments relating to Business Ethics annually by June 30. The chair will also submit an annual financial report describing the use of funds in the prior fiscal year and a plan of work and budget for the use of funds in the upcoming fiscal year. The report, plan of work, and budget must be approved by the COBE Dean. The holder of this chair may be removed by the Dean due to failure to make an annual report or to successfully carry out the duties of the position.
Criteria and Materials Required for Consideration
The person selected for this chair must be a nationally recognized leader who teaches and researches in the area of business ethics. They must be able to demonstrate:
A record of excellence in teaching courses with a substantial business ethics component;
A successful and active research agenda involving business ethics; and
A committed willingness to take on service responsibilities related to business ethics beyond typical departmental/college/institutional service. This may include: holding one or more annual panel discussions or presentations on a business ethics topic, conducting a COBE student business ethics case study competition, and sponsoring a student team in a national business ethics case study competition or other high impact service activities established in the annual plan of work.
They are currently an associate professor or professor or have credentials that will allow them to be employed at this level.
A commitment to teach at least two of the following course preparations annually (typically on a three-course per year teaching load).

This letter should include, but not be limited to (a) the applicant's qualifications for this role; (b) the record of teaching achievement in business ethics upon which the application is based and willingness to teach existing COBE business ethics courses; (c) their research area, accomplishments, and future research plans; and (d) their willingness to conduct service responsibilities in alignment with the Robert V. Hansberger Endowed Chair of Business Ethics.

Selection of Awardees
The selection committee for the Robert V. Hansberger Endowed Chair will consist of one faculty member from each COBE department appointed by the Dean. The selection committee will review the materials and make its recommendation of the awardee. The Dean will consider the recommendation of selection committee and per Boise State University Policy 11030, seek approval from the Provost and will make the appointment.
The guidelines for filling the Robert V. Hansberger Endowed Chair are aligned with the Boise State University Foundation fund agreement dated December 21, 2020 establishing this chair. They will be reviewed and may be modified at any time the chair is vacant. While holding this endowed chair, the recipient will not be eligible for other COBE awards providing bonuses or financial stipends. The selected candidate will be considered for the award of tenure upon hire into a position at the rank of associate professor or professor. Separately, the Hansberger Endowed Chair per Boise State University Policy 110303 is awarded for the period of five (5) years renewable.

Minimum/Required Qualifications
Earned terminal degree (e.g., doctorate in a business discipline or J.D.) awarded by a program accredited by AACSB, the ABA, or an equivalent accreditation body. Scholarly production and teaching experience sufficient to be hired at the level of associate professor or professor.

Salary and Benefits
Salary is competitive with AACSB medians based on comparable business colleges. Additionally, while holding the Robert V. Hansberger Endowed Chair, you will receive an additional $25,000 per year salary stipend along with $35,000 per year available from endowment earnings to be used in accomplishing your goals.
