Job Description for Compliance and Data Privacy Officer

As a Compliance and Data Privacy Officer, the successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Identify potential risks to the Corporations and devise implement, monitor and enforce a compliance program that ensures proper implementation of existing regulations, laws and corporate policies and procedures.
  • Serve as liaison with regulatory authorities, government agencies, grantors, industry groups, and other stakeholders to oversee the preparation and submission of required regulatory filings, reports, and disclosures to ensure that the Corporations maintain accurate and up-to-date records to demonstrate compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Establish, develop, monitor, implement and enforce privacy due diligence processes, a vendor risk management program, and incident response procedures and protocols to effectively protect the Corporations and to respond to privacy incidents, breaches, and complaints, lead and coordinate response efforts, and implement remediation measures to mitigate harm and prevent recurrence.
  • Coordinate privacy impact and risk assessments to identify, assess, and mitigate privacy risks associated with the organization's data processing activities and addresses privacy vulnerabilities to protect personal information shared with third parties, and published on the Corporations' websites from unauthorized access or disclosure.
  • Develop risk mitigation strategies, controls, and monitoring mechanisms and perform investigations to ensure compliance with corporate policies, organize, document and ensure appropriate internal and external risk reporting, and develop and deliver training programs to educate the workforce, staff, officers, senior leadership and the Board of Directors about compliance requirements, corporate policies, code of conduct and ethical standards, data privacy requirements, and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Manage and respond to NY Freedom of Information Law ("FOIL") requests received by the Corporations.

The Compliance and Data Privacy Officer will regularly report to the Board of Directors for the Corporation on his or her activities and assessments and may attend Board Committee meetings as requested. The incumbent will collaborate with all stakeholders including The State University of New York ("SUNY"), the Research Foundation, and Empire State Development Corporation



Job Requirements:

Minimum Requirements for Compliance and Data Privacy Officer

Education Level Required: A bachelor's degree from a college or University accredited by the US Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization.

Preferred: J. D. or LLB from accredited law school or University accredited by the US Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization; admitted to New York State Bar, in good standing; and/or M.B.A., CPA or CIA.

Experience Required

Minimum of 5 years of progressively more complex compliance experience, preferably with corporate in-house, law firm and/or government experience. Relevant experience in a closely related field--e.g., legal or audit---may be substituted for required compliance or data privacy experience.

Knowledge Required

Substantial and demonstrated experience with compliance and data privacy programs. Compliance and/or Ethics certification preferred. Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills. Position demands exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail and independent follow-through as well as strong interpersonal skills and team orientation.

Salary Range:

  • 5-7 years experience $110,000 - $125,000
  • 7-10 years experience $125,000 - $150,000
  • 10+ years experience $150,000 - $175,000

*Posted rates are dependent on level of education, licensing and experience.
