Position Summary:

The Advisor I is responsible for advising students and assessing their eligibility for various aid programs (federal, state and institutional).


Reporting and Supervisory Relationships:

Direct reporting relationship to the Director of Financial Aid.


Essential Responsibilities:



  1. Counsel and advises perspective and enrolled students of availability and eligibility of federal, state and local student financial aid programs and benefits.

  2. Review and verify, documents submitted by financial aid applicants in accordance to federal and state guidelines. Determines applicable award amounts and awards federal, state and institutional aid.

  3. Assists students in completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for consideration of federal and state aid. Conducts group workshops and represents the Financial Aid Office at various on and off campus events. Communicate campus wide financial aid updates to prospective and continuing students.

  4. Remain current on financial aid regulations by attending seminars, workshops, webinars and reading the federal student aid handbook, code of federal regulations and other printed materials.

  5. Maintains data entry using Colleague integrated software system by inputting data from Student Aid Report (SAR) and develops initial student profile.

  6. Ability to schedule time and work efficiently under the pressure of deadlines without immediate supervision.

  7. Provide back up to departmental staff when needed and in their absence.

  8. Review reports and resolve discrepancies related to student file processing.

  9. Performs a variety of support functions, which are primarily routine in nature, but require knowledge of the general operating procedures of the department.

  10. Performs other duties as assigned within the scope of the department, consistent with the role of this position.


Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

Employee is subject to indoor work, protected from weather conditions. Work is sedentary in nature and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently/constantly in order to life, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.


Minimum Qualifications:



  1. Associate's degree in business, social science, or related field; or two years working knowledge of Financial Aid programs can be substituted for the Associate's degree.

  2. Two years experience working in student financial aid office.

  3. Demonstrated ability to interpret federal, state, and institutional student financial aid guidelines and process requests for financial assistance.

  4. Knowledge of computer operation and ability to input and interpret data.

  5. Ability to work in stressful situations, meet deadlines, and demonstrates proficiency using Common Origination & Disbursements (COD), National Student Loan Data Systems (NSLDS) and Federal Administrator Access (FAA) systems.


Preferred Qualifications:



  1. Demonstrated evidence of being detail-oriented and possessing strong organizational, oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.

  2. Previous experience with Ellucian Colleague system.

  3. Ability to exercise independent action involving the interpretation of established policies and procedures


Anticipated Work Hours and Days:

Monday through Thursday, 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.


Salary:

minimum starting-$39,953; salary commensurate with experience
