Overview

  • Laboratory Procedures: Prepares culture media and solutions; set up, maintain, and harvests tissue cultures; prepares cells for chromosome or molecular cytogenetic analysis by both routine and special means; makes slide preparations; prepares and operates automated slide scanning platform; cuts and organizes cell spreads into karyograms using Applied Spectral Imaging software; prepares tissue slides for analysis using DNA hybridization techniques; stains chromosome preparations using both routine and special techniques; enters data into laboratory information system.
  • Prepares summary of procedures and findings; keeps appropriate records; makes and answers telephone calls related to obtaining specimens and patient information needed for sample processing and preparing reports
  • Maintains inventory or FISH assays, reagents, and laboratory supplies
  • Cleans and maintains laboratory equipment and work spaces


Responsibilities

Education & Experince:

  • Completion of a 2 year accredited program in Medical Laboratory Technician training plus MLT (ASCP) within 90 days of hire or AMT certification within 90 days of hire. Depending on date of training, different continuing education requirements will apply.

OR

  • Bachelor’s degree in a chemical or biological science and two years of Laboratory Technical Assistant training/experience performing standardized laboratory tests in the specialty area(s) in which high complexity testing will be performed; MLT (ASCP) or AMT certification preferred. Depending on date of training, different continuing education requirements will apply.

Job Related Knowledge, Skills & Abilitie:

  • Ability to complete time sensitive tasks according to protocols, and prioritize multiple tasks at one time
  • Must have excellent communication, analytical and organizational skills: both written and verbal
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team while being collaborative in resolving problems
  • Must be proficient with computers running Windows and PC applications e.g. MS Excel, Oracle, Access, Word and Powerpoint).
  • Must have demonstrated excellent customer service skills both on the phone and in person
  • Must possess energy and drive to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy to maintain effective working relationships

Qualifications



Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree with courses in genetics, cytogenetics, and/or molecular biology
  • Work experience in a clinical cytogenetics laboratory strongly preferred

Registrations, Certifications and/or Licenses:

  • ASCP certification in clinical cytogenetic technology
