About the School of Information TechnologyThe School of Information Technology (SoIT) is a national leader in studying solutions and needs that connect people, information, and the technology of the time. The SoIT is home to Ohio's first Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Information Technology. In addition, it is home to Ohio's first ABET accredited Bachelor of Science in Information Technology and a Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity. The SoIT has been growing at 20% annually and currently serves more than 2300 students with 32 full-time faculty members, 30 full-time staff, and 39 adjunct faculty. The SoIT is home to several centers including an NSA/DHS Center for Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense, the Information Technology Solutions Center, the Ohio Cyber Range Institute, Applied Machine Learning and Intelligence Center, the Civic Technologies Lab, and the newly formed Information Technology Analytics Center. The SoIT is a leader in a new sub disciplinary area, ecological IT, at the intersection of information technology and ecology/applied biology. The SoIT has several projects that utilizes internet of things technologies along with data analytics technologies to understand ecological changes and develop sustainable solutions and is looking to expand this disciplinary space through courses and academic programs. We are looking for a post-doctoral fellow to leverage data from environmental sensors to assist in the development of IT solutions for the conservation of imperiled bats.
Job OverviewThe Post Doc Fellow is a two-year grant-funded position to assist the Principal Investigator in studies and applications of technological solutions for biodiversity conservation. The Post Doc Fellow will conduct field and laboratory research, analyze data, publish in peer-reviewed journals, and develop plans for sustainable solutions. Field research will include deploying IT solutions such as wildlife sensors including cameras, acoustic recorders, and climate dataloggers along with associate data analytics and software tools. Lab research will include creating prototypes of conservation solutions and determining user needs and experiences.
Essential Functions
  • Deploy environmental and wildlife sensors at field locations in the midwestern United States

  • Gather and analyze data from sensors

  • Prepare and conduct user studies for conservation technologies

  • Prepare data summaries, reports, manuscripts and presentations of research results

  • Participate/assist in manuscript writing for publication in scientific journals and/or presentation

  • Required EducationDoctoral Degree in information technology, biology, wildlife ecology, or a related field.
    Required Experience
  • In-depth knowledge of advanced statistical analyses, such as general additive models and mark-recapture models, and program R

  • Familiarity with passive wildlife and climate sensors, such as bat detectors, temperature sensors, and trail cameras

  • At least 1 year of experience surveying caves or other underground environments

  • At least 1 year of experience capturing and identifying bats in eastern North America

    • The Post Doc Fellow must be able and comfortable with deploying sensors in underground environments, forests, and abandoned structures
