From environmental planning and permitting to remediation and site characterization, we conduct stream and wetland delineations as well as chemical data management and hydrogeologic studies. Kleinfelder has an exceptionally strong portfolio of client relationships in the water/wastewater, transportation, commercial, and energy sectors that is driving our ability to further grow and diversify our staffing profile. We are seeking an experienced Environmental Professional to join the Environmental Permitting and Planning (EP&P) Team in the Columbus, OH or Toledo, OH area.

The successful candidate should be a self-starter who can perform stream and wetland and other natural resources surveys. This candidate should be familiar with Ohio natural resources permitting for stream and wetland impacts and threatened and endangered (T&E) species- experience in Pennsylvania, Indiana, Michigan or West Virginia is a plus. This position requires strong collaboration and communication skills, project management, marketing/proposal preparation skills, and a level of competency with direct client and regulatory agent engagement. Mentoring and guiding junior staff will also be required.

Kleinfelder maintains multiple office locations in Ohio. This position may be based out of: Columbus or Toledo, and includes an option for remote work. This position will require limited travel for fieldwork activities.

The ideal candidate should possess:


  • Strong wetland delineation skills, PWS certification and/or ORAM/HHEI/QHEI training a plus;

  • Robust state and federal level regulatory agency expertise, primarily in Ohio, secondary knowledge of surrounding states is a plus;

  • Established record guiding projects through state and federal environmental permitting, including all steps of design, submittal, and regulatory interface associated with:


    • Section 401/404 of the Clean Water Act (CWA)


      • USACE General and Individual Permits, State Programmatic General Permits (SPGP- Pennsylvania)

      • State Water Quality Certifications

      • State/local wetlands and waterways, township, and floodplain regulations

      • Permittee Responsible Stream and Wetland Mitigation


    • Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) Development

    • Section 7 of the Endangered Species Act


  • Experience with wetland, stream, and groundwater monitoring/gauging;

  • Independent thinking skills, the ability to self-start, able to work independently when needed;

  • Effective communication skills;

  • Excellent teamwork and leadership skills;

  • Strong technical writing and QA/QC skills;

  • Ability to effectively prepare and review proposals and reports;

  • Ability to effectively engage directly with staff and leadership;

  • Experience retaining and managing subcontractors.


Preference will be given to candidates who also possess the following:

  • Experience with National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permitting (and/or Pennsylvania Chapter 102 permitting);

  • National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) experience;

  • Experience conducting and completing Phase I Environmental Site Assessments;

  • GIS Skills;

  • Experience with stream and wetland mitigation design;

  • Prior experience conducting construction stormwater compliance inspections;

  • Prior experience conducting specialized T&E species surveys.


All candidates require:

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) in Environmental, Biological, or Ecological Science, Environmental Policy, or a related field;

  • 8-10 years of experience in environmental consulting, and/or regulatory agency employment in the region;

  • Prior experience working and coordinating with federal, state, and local regulatory agencies.
