POSITION SUMMARY

Targa’s Operational Tax Department located in downtown Houston is seeking a highly qualified, self-motivated, enthusiastic, tax technical and computer savvy individual with excellent communication and collaboration skills.  The ideal candidate should be driven to consistently bring value as an integral member of a high performing team where they will be challenged with applying their knowledge to multiple facets of Sales/Use/Excise taxes including, but not limited to, performing various complex tax research and analysis projects, with emphasis on motor fuels and excise tax issues as they pertain to midstream business, assisting with use tax determinations, completing monthly tax compliance assignments, Terminal Operator and Carrier Summary reports, and other special projects as identified.  This position offers significant opportunities for the right candidate to advance, take ownership of their own tax destination, and be involved in every level/aspect of Targa’s exciting and growing operational tax activities. JOB FUNCTIONS AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Manage motor fuels and excise tax determinations and research.

  • Prepare and file Federal and State returns related to our blendstock business, including Federal Terminal Operator and Carrier Summary reports.

  • Manage and assist in preparing other Federal and State Excise tax returns as needed.

  • Assist in monthly use tax analysis of A/P data to determine accurate use tax liabilities.

  • Conduct tax research and analysis to confirm positions on various tax issues, to help minimize taxes where possible, assist in identifying tax planning opportunities and help draft tax memorandums and training documents as needed.

  • Work on special projects as identified by the team such as assisting with training internal and external stake holders so that key data elements to determine taxability are clarified and relayed.

  • Assist in preparation and maintenance of tax account reconciliations.

  • Conduct tax compliance activities; preparing and filing assigned returns.

  • Collaborate with other accounting/finance functions.

MINIMUM ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Bachelor's degree.

  • 3 plus years’ direct experience in federal and state motor fuels tax research/ return preparation at another Oil and gas company or consulting firm.

  • Knowledge of Federal and State laws regarding imports and exports of blendstocks to ensure compliance with all Federal and State excise tax laws and rules.

  • Strong knowledge of Texas’ manufacturing rules and laws as well as contractor’s/construction laws.

  • Ability to work in a team environment which values teamwork and strong collaboration.

  • Desire to identify problems/issues; propose and develop solutions and take ownership, including follow through to achieve desired outcomes.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and responsibilities to meet deadlines.

  • Internally driven to be consistently proactive.

  • Ability to work required overtime as deemed necessary during critical periods.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Excellent technical skills, such as Microsoft Excel skills with demonstrated ability to handle a high volume of data and utilize pivot tables, complex formulas, VLOOKUPs, etc.

  • Experience with tax research software.

  • Regular and reliable attendance.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Previous oil and gas experience or knowledge.

  • Working knowledge of RightAngle accounting software.

  • Knowledge of state tax laws in OK, ND, NM, LA and FL.

  • Experience with Allegro, Access, Avalara or other fuels tax compliance software.

  • Experience in PinPoint or other Use tax determination software.

  • Experience filing state tax returns in various states.

  • Experience with Alteryx software.

  • Experience in Oracle Financials Cloud.

  • Experience with managing adval taxes.

  • Certified Public Accountant or eligibility a plus.
