The Disability Service Program (DSP) is dedicated to affording students with disabilities equitable access to opportunities to participate in the University's programs, courses, and activities. DSP provides accommodations at no cost to any student who has a documented disability, medical condition, or mental health condition as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. Students should always feel welcomed, valued, affirmed, and respected through the accommodations process.


Position Summary


The Associate Director for the Disability Services Program (DSP) is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the office under the Directors supervision. The Associate Director will provide direct, comprehensive accommodations review and collaborate with academic departments and staff working to ensure compliance for students with documented disabilities. This position will supervise the Accommodation Specialists and Interpreter Coordinator. This person will coordinate assessment and report writing in collaboration with the Director and contribute to developing and monitoring budgets and tracking operational costs. This person will provide, in partnership with the Director, leadership and direction for the department on policy issues, ADA research and compliance, accommodations grievance processes, and any personnel issues including supervision of staff. This person must demonstrate a commitment to the principles of equity, and inclusion; student development; universal design for learning; and diversity through involvement and participation in University/division-wide projects and initiatives. This position reports to the Director of DSP.


Essential Functions


Departmental Leadership and Management:
  • Assist the Director in areas of strategic visioning, implementation, and assessment for the DSP office; in the absence of the Director, provide leadership on policy development and interpretation, staff supervision, and departmental administration.
  • Manage day to day operations of the department, including maintaining and collaborating with staff to refine Accommodate, DSPs student accommodations tracking platform.
  • Assist the Director with University-wide faculty and staff training.
  • Oversee and manage proactive student sessions and refresher orientations to support student involvement in DSP outside the accommodations process.
  • Partner with the Director and team on creating a student-centered and developmental experience for undergraduate, graduate, and law students.
  • Elevate and embeds diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) into DSP operations, including taking an intersectional approach and increasing awareness and inclusion of neurodiversity and the identity of disability as part of our commitment to DEI.
Accommodations
  • Meet with assigned caseload of students.
  • Facilitate student awareness of departmental services and policies.
  • Review and evaluate documentation to determine reasonable accommodations.
  • Coordinate, services, equipment, and assistive technology required for the provision of reasonable accommodations.
  • Serve as the second point,( Accommodations Specialist is the first point) of resolution for formal grievances within the accommodations process, which includes reviewing and gathering information relevant to the concern, conflict resolution, and mediation.
Administration:
  • Engage in Accommodations review, evaluation, outreach, implementation and support/compliance with ADA and other applicable legislation.
  • Manage day to day operations of the department, including maintaining and collaborating with staff to refine Accommodate, DSPs student accommodations tracking platform Coordinate and implement assessment and accommodations report writing.
  • In partnership with the Director, stay current on ADA-related laws and policies and balance compliance with student experience
Supervision:
  • Train, supervise, and evaluate full-time Accommodations Specialists and Interpreter Coordinator.
  • Provide support and guidance for Accommodations Specialists and Interpreter Coordinator in addressing concerns relating to the approval or implementation of accommodations.
Professional Development and Other Duties as Assigned:
  • Coordinate on-going professional development program within the department.
  • Facilitate orientation and education sessions for undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Serve on the DSP leadership team.
  • Represent DSP on committees and other special projects.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Expertise in ADA, section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and disability legislation as it relates to higher education.
  • Experience with disability related laws to support a student who has an internship or field experience and is seeking accommodations.
  • Knowledge of FERPA.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality at a high level.
  • Ability to interpret diagnostic/psychological assessments used to assess students with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of college student growth and development.
  • Knowledge of procedures for resolving disability accommodation issues.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Capacity to make timely decisions in the interest of the student, DSP, and the University in conjunction with applicable laws.
  • Ability to provide consultation to faculty and staff on best practices for the implementation of accommodations for students with disabilities.
  • Ability to train and lead staff.
  • Demonstrated ability implementing a developmental approach to support and engage students in the interactive accommodation process.

Required Qualifications

  • Masters degree in education, special education, student affairs, counseling, social work, psychology, higher education administration, or related field
  • 5 years post-masters experience working in higher education
  • 3 years experience supervising professional staff
  • 5 years of professional experience working in disability services at a post-secondary institution
  • Experience training and educating college faculty
  • 3 years of experience reviewing, evaluating, and determining accommodations for students with disabilities in higher education
  • Demonstrated commitment to the advancement of diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Experience with Universal Design for Learning

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with department management and leadership
  • Experience developing and implementing assessment plans and reports
  • Experience with ADA or disability related policy development and implementation
  • Demonstrated experience implementing a developmental approach to support and engage students with multiple intersecting social identities, including but not limited to disability, race, LGBTIQ, and international status
  • Experience in project management and implementation of new initiatives
  • Experience with Accommodate or similar student tracking software

Work Schedule

Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Evenings and weekends as required.

Salary Grade Number:

The salary grade for the position is 11.



Salary Range:

The salary range for this position is $65,000-$75,000.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate's sex or any other protected status.
