The English Language Learner (EL) Teacher is responsible for providing EL K-12 program administration, professional support and training, and student and family services.  The incumbent applies sound language acquisition principals to program development, teacher support, and student education.  In addition, the EL Teacher advises administration in order to ensure state and federal compliance. 


This is a full-time position. Ability to work independently, typically 40+ hours per week is required. Ability to maintain a professional home office without distraction during workday, typically 9-5 (or 8-4) or as defined by the school.

  • Provides leadership and technical assistance for K-12 EL programs and services, including Title III monitoring and guidance for teachers and administrators;

  • Gives guidance and support for State Board of Education initiatives and policies, state statutes, and all aspects of Title III including guidelines, statutes, applications, and budgets;

  • Administers and/or oversees administration of annual required state testing (OELPA and OELPS) of EL students;

  • Delivers technical assistance for standards implementation and professional learning around teaching-learning strategies, assessment, program development and evaluation, curriculum development and implementation;

  • Provides ongoing professional development and support related to EL services, methodology, and resources to OHVA teachers, staff, and administration;

  • Collaborates with building principals and teachers to review individual EL student progress;

  • Teaches EL classes and/or provide individual student support as needed

  • Create opportunities for onsite student/family events

  • Determine family communication needs, including recommending interpreters and translators for parent/guardian communication.

  • Learns the entire K12 curriculum for assigned grade levels and is able to demonstrate knowledge of how state standards align with it;

  • Augments course content according to prescribed policies and procedures using appropriate asynchronous and synchronous tools;

  • Collaborates with grade-level team regarding instruction, resources, interventions and data-driven decision making;

  • Provides individualized instruction to help each student master K12 curricular objectives;

  • Prepares students for high stakes standardized tests;

  • Establishes and maintains positive rapport with families and regularly communicates with students and learning coaches/parents to keep them adequately apprised of the student’s progress and issues;

  • Supports learning coaches/parents with student curricular and instructional issues in a virtual classroom environment, balancing the flexibility of the K12 curriculum with proper enforcement of Academy policies and procedures;

  • Makes placement and promotion decisions by generating formal and informal reports regarding student progress, alerting administrators to concerns about student performance and progress;

  • Creates and manages a home office;

  • Utilizes data analysis and data driven instruction;

  • Works collaboratively with teaching staff and families to create and maintain an Individualized Learning Plan (ILP).

  • Performs onsite student/family interview;

  • Delivers onsite student testing (OELPA and OELPS);

  • Attends professional development, teacher meetings, professional conferences (OTESOL), and onsite student/family events;

  • Collects and analyzes formative and summative assessments;

  • Teaches scheduled Class Connect sessions for specific subject areas and homeroom;

  • Collaborates with peers in order to provide a positive experience for students;

  • Travels to and participates in staff meetings, school outings, marketing events, state testing, professional development sessions, and other experiences;

  • Maintains records regarding students in accordance with school policy and state requirements; prepares reports regarding students and classroom matters as directed;


Supervisory Responsibilities: This position has no supervisory responsibilities. 


Minimum Required Qualifications:   



  • Bachelor's degree AND

  • One (1) year of experience teaching non-native English speakers


Certificates and Licenses: Appropriate Ohio state teaching certification including K-12 TESOL Licensure or Endorsement


OTHER REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 



  • Experience with/knowledge of working with families of EL students

  • Strong interpersonal skills emphasizing tact, promptness, patience and courtesy; ability to establish a professional, effective rapport with students

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, Microsoft Office, Power Point and Outlook, as well as Internet research methods and report writing techniques; Utilizes computer software associated with curriculum; obtains additional training in technology as required

  • Able to read data and determine what steps are needed to assist students academically on an individual and/or classroom basis

  • Able to adapt learning plans to meet different needs and learning styles; create an instructional and whole class environment favorable to learning and personal growth

  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing

  • Demonstrates the use of good judgment in decision-making

  • Great organizational and time management skills

  • Customer service orientation to include promptness and appropriateness of responses to needs and requests of students and learning coaches

  • Understanding of applicable sections of the State Education Code and other pertinent regulations

  • Obtains additional licensing as required

  • Ability to travel within and between assigned geographic areas to support students

  • Attend regularly scheduled meetings and participate in school activities, open houses and orientations

  • Ability to pass required background check


DESIRED Qualifications:



  • Master’s degree in Education or related field

  • Experience with charter and/or online school environment

  • Experience supporting adults and children in the use of technology

  • Ability to learn new technologies and tools

  • Special education, gifted, EL, or subject-specific endorsement

  • Proficient in principles, theories, practices, methods and techniques used in curriculum development and classroom instruction for a diverse student population, such as English Language Learners (EL), special needs, at-risk, and/or gifted students

  • Experience teaching in both online and in a brick-and-mortar environments

  • Experience working in a home environment full time
