HEREDITARY GENOMICS DIVISION (IN-HGN-IUINA)



Department Information



One of the first human genetics departments in the country, the Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics at IU School of Medicine has a rich history of training geneticists and genetic counselors and providing genetic consultation and counseling services. Currently ranked 5th in the nation among Genetics Departments for NIH Funding, received in 2023, the department contributes to the understanding of numerous genetic conditions through the integration of basic research in genetic and genomic mechanisms, translational research in disease models, and clinical trials in rare and common genetic diseases.



Job Summary



Department-Specific Responsibilities


  • Provides genetic counseling for Parkinson's disease (PD)-related research studies.

  • Maintains required state licensure and completes continuing education efforts.

  • Attends and contributes to study meetings across research projects.

  • Assists in the development of participant-facing materials.

General Responsibilities


  • Identifies appropriate tests for particular condition(s), interprets test results, and advises on appropriate follow-ups following counseling.

  • Prepares cases for evaluation, which may include medical record review, research of conditions, psychosocial assessments, and evaluations of appropriate testing options.

  • Provides genetics education to groups and individuals upon request. Target audiences could include, but are not limited to, healthcare providers, schools, and community groups.

  • Develops and presents lectures to genetic counseling students and serves on advisory committees.

  • Provides oversight for genetic counselors ensuring uniform implementation of protocols and testing.

  • Develops new study and information materials.

  • Contributes to ongoing research efforts related to the evaluation and improvement of the genetic counseling field.

  • Keeps up-to-date on genetics education via continuing education efforts.




Qualifications



This position is posted at the Expert Career Level but may be filled at the Advanced Career Level depending on the candidate's qualifications. Although they will be similar, the duties and responsibilities may differ if filled at the lower rank. Please see the qualifications for each level listed below.



Expert Requirements:



EDUCATION



Required



  • Master's degree in Genetic science, counseling, or related field.

  • ABGC board certified.

WORK EXPERIENCE



Required



  • 8 years as a genetic counselor.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES



Required



  • Genetic counseling license in the state of Indiana or other state(s) as necessary for job duties.

SKILLS

Working Conditions / Demands



The role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

This is a fully remote position. However, this is subject to change in the future based on university policy and business needs.



Advertised Salary



Expert Level: $91,046.40 - $101,046.40 per year based on experience and internal equity within the department.


Advanced Level: $74,219.20 - $84,219.20 per year based on experience and internal equity within the department.
