Position Overview:
We are seeking a Scientific Programmer to join our team and support NOAA Office of Water Prediction. The location for this work is to be performed at Silver Spring, MD or Tuscaloosa, AL The selected candidate will play a crucial role in providing programming and data analysis services to the Office of Water Prediction (OWP). The OWP is dedicated to assessing and research of the state-of-the-science national hydrologic analyses, forecast information, data, and decision-support services . The successful candidate will collaborate closely with NOAA OWP team and regional partners to ensure the seamless execution of project activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop tools for data visualization, analysis, and reporting of hydrological data.
  • Collect, synthesize, and manage environmental and ecological data relevant to NOAA's trust resources.
  • Ensure the addition of metadata and promote data accessibility and interoperability.
  • Collaborate with OWP data providers to maintain proper data governance and develop standardized products.
  • Provide data and communicate findings to the OWP team members, regulatory programs, partners, and stakeholders.
  • Conduct sophisticated data analyses and potentially publish results in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
  • Produce comprehensive documentation of work conducted, including technical documents, reference materials, and reports.

Required Skills/Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in natural sciences, statistics, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Intermediate proficiency in Python and R programming language (tidyverse, function development, Rmarkdown).
  • Demonstrated experience in project management for complex scientific programs.
  • Strong communication skills for engaging with diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to meeting strict timelines.

Preferred Skills/Qualifications:

  • Advanced knowledge of R programming language (R package development, RStudio Connect, R Shiny).
  • Advanced degree in natural sciences or statistics.
  • Experience with ArcGIS and supporting Hydrological data
